The STAR Bereavement Peer Support Group was set up in 2023 by a small group of people who had all been bereaved or experienced significant loss. The basis for STAR is that many of us need a safe space where people can meet who have something in common: we are members of a club that none of us wanted to join! It is not a counselling session and although the facilitators have all undergone STAR training, they are not trained counsellors.

The sessions aim to reassure people that their experiences, as painful as they might be, are a normal part of grieving. Because it is a human experience, bereavement does not necessarily just get easier every day. For many people it is a roller coaster and the way that bereavement often changes shape over time, and we can learn to manage our thoughts and feelings to handle these changes.

STAR does not provide formal therapy because we know that for a lot of people, their biggest need is just to speak to others who have gone through something similar. People attending the group can also find signposting to other relevant organisations. We work closely with our local NHS team and social providers.

STAR stands for Share Talk and Remember. Click on this link to our video if you would like to learn more about us.
